What You Sign Is What You Get: Ending Blind Signing with ERC-8009

Duration: 00:00:00

Speaker: Mark Virchenko

Type: CLS - Talk (Open Tech Summit)

Expertise:

Event: Devcon 8

Date: Nov 2026

Most crypto users approve transactions they can’t read. The wallet shows raw data, the user signs anyway, and that’s how funds get drained. The industry’s main fix is to describe every contract so wallets can show it in plain words, but new contracts are deployed every day and descriptions can’t keep up. ERC-8009 (Proxy Clear Signing) takes a different approach: instead of explaining *what a contract does*, it shows *what will happen to your balance*. You sign the outcome, such as “I spend at most 100 USDC and receive at least 0.03 ETH”, and an on-chain proxy cancels the transaction if the result is any different. In this talk, Mark Virchenko shows how the open-source standard works, demos it on Trezor and Ledger hardware wallets, and explains how developers and wallet teams can adopt it.
