What pop-up cities have proven so far, and how to make it travel further

Duration: NaN:NaN:NaN

Speaker: Jimin Lee

Type: Talk

Expertise: Some familiarity with the topic

Event: Devcon

Date: Nov 2026

Pop-up cities are temporary, curated communities, typically running weeks to months, that grew out of the Ethereum ecosystem as an attempt to carry its values and coordination experiments into a physical, social setting. The talk draws on 7+ months of field research and a flagship report covering their economic models, governance and community outcomes; the scope is pop-up cities in the Ethereum and cypherpunk context rather than the wider set of residencies and adjacent projects. It covers what has been proven at the participant and organisational level, where compounding at the ecosystem level remains open, and how those outcomes, in education, governance, community health and matchmaking, can be distributed beyond the format, to schools, local communities, city councils and people who will never attend one. Details may be adjusted closer to the event.
