Trie Another Way: The new state trie and Ethereum’s State Migration

Duration: NaN:NaN:NaN

Speaker: Maria

Type: Talk

Expertise: Some familiarity with the topic

Event: Devcon

Date: Nov 2026

This talk offers a fast, accessible tour of two evolving proposals: the Partitioned Binary Tree (PBT), which rethinks how Ethereum commits to accounts, storage, and code, and the migration path from today’s MPT-based state. We’ll unpack the design goals, sketch the proposed offline journey (conversion, verifiable distribution, catch-up, shadow commitments, and activation) and highlight the trade-offs still under discussion. Rather than presenting a finished blueprint, attendees will gain a mental model for reading the drafts, understanding why the transition is unusually delicate, and joining the work while key details are still being shaped.
