There's a Critical Bug in x402 markets: A Study of 1200 merchants in an unfair agentic market

x402 is a market where the buyer is a machine. it cannot be lured with ads. It buys from a marketplace's ranked list, whichever merchant best suits its need. Core problem: - marketplaces rank merchants on volume & unique buyers. A new merchant has neither. - new merchants enter a cold-start state: no volume without buyers, no buyers without volume. my independent research on 1,212 x402 merchants and 24 interviews shows: 1. Most volume in a category sits with a few merchants. Top-3 share runs 42% to 91%. 2. In worst case, 3 of 34 take 91.2% of payments. 3. Better listings do not rank higher. Past sales decide 70-98% of a merchant's rank. 4. New merchants have no tools to improve their ranking & are invisible to agents. My research also proposes fixes. Why now: 100M+ x402 transactions have settled on Base since mid-2025 yet half are artificial and real merchants never enter or give up. If not fixed, x402 marketplaces become monopolies without growth, or end before they take off
