Migrating from a Private Blockchain to Ethereum: Engineering Lessons

Duration: NaN:NaN:NaN

Speaker: Vivian Plasencia

Type: Talk

Expertise: No prior knowledge

Event: Devcon

Date: Nov 2026

Migrating an application from a permissioned blockchain to Ethereum requires much more than deploying it on a public network. Public state fundamentally changes assumptions around privacy, trust, governance, transaction costs, and user experience. As more organizations migrate existing blockchain systems to Ethereum, understanding these engineering trade offs is becoming increasingly important. This talk shares the engineering lessons from that migration, covering the motivations and benefits of moving to Ethereum, privacy-preserving transactions, and digital identity. It explores how public state changes application architecture, how privacy can be preserved despite transparent execution, and the engineering trade offs between privacy, gas sponsorship, governance, and user experience. Attendees will leave with practical design patterns and architectural lessons they can apply when building privacy-preserving applications or migrating existing blockchain systems to Ethereum.
