LightHouse Decentralized Checkpoint Sync

Duration: NaN:NaN:NaN

Speaker: Roheemah Abolare

Type: CLS - EPF Talk

Expertise: Some familiarity with the topic

Event: Devcon

Date: Nov 2026

Checkpoint sync today requires trusting a checkpoint provider. We're building a trust-minimized pathway for Lighthouse: a node bootstraps as a light client from a hardcoded, network-verified root, syncs forward using the existing light client protocol, and backfills a recent state in verifiable chunks, no trusted URL required. We'll cover why the historical light client data Lighthouse needs to serve this was silently dropped, not because of a design flaw, but three small, independently reasonable optimizations stacking up; the architecture we landed on to fix it without touching Lighthouse's live sync path; and several concrete mistakes we only caught by diving deep into the codebase and checking claims.
