From Linux to Ethereum: What Open Source Taught Me About Building Public Infrastructure

Duration: NaN:NaN:NaN

Speaker: Liraz Siri

Type: CLS - Talk (Open Tech Summit)

Expertise:

Event: Devcon

Date: Nov 2026

Long before blockchains, open source communities were already building shared infrastructure that no single company owned. Liraz Siri has worked on both sides: as co-founder of TurnKey Linux, an open source project that made Linux servers easy to deploy, and later in Ethereum, where his team built open infrastructure for gasless transactions and now helps builders at the Ethereum Alignment Fund. In this talk, he shares what carries over between the two worlds and what doesn't: licensing and forking, funding and sustainability, security, and why good defaults matter more than features. He finishes with practical advice for open source developers who want to build on Ethereum, and for Ethereum builders who want to learn from decades of open source experience.
