An update on Local Mixing (iO)

Duration: NaN:NaN:NaN

Speaker: Janmajaya Mall

Type: Talk

Expertise: Some familiarity with the topic

Event: Devcon

Date: Nov 2026

At Devcon 2024, we introduced local-mixing, for the first time, as a potential path to practical obfuscation in near future. To gather community interest, we launched a bounty to break our implementation of local-mixing. This effectively kickstarted a renewed interest in practical iO and further progress on the merely theoretical, back then, local-mixing construction. Over the past 2 years, we've made incredible progress on local-mixing construction and now, finally, have a construction for which we've have logical security arguments (not formal proof yet!), which we'd like to share with the audience. Ofcourse, our path is filled with dead-ends, mistakes, and failed ideas. However, we learnt from our mistakes, invented new techniques in which we've reasonable confidence. We'd like to present our journey to the audience- paths pursued, new techniques, and finally the constructions. We'll also release a set of iO challenges, since the jury on formal security on local mixing is still out.
